چکیده

In blue petrels (Halobaena caerulea), females are supposed to be particularly choosy and mate choice can take a couple of years. these lifelong monogamous seabirds, choosing good is crucial has strong influence on their fitness. Due nocturnal habits, the absence sexual dimorphism, physical barrier between males calling from burrow flying above colony, vocal signals seem one main channels for communicate with potential mates. previous study, we investigated whether acoustic parameters male calls carry information about morphological characteristics that might indicators males’ qualities. Here, experimentally test linked actually attractive females. To do so, played back modified in colony Kerguelen archipelago. We found were more attracted by high-pitched calls, broadcasted at high call rate. Previous studies showed relationship pitch bill depth length. filter-feeding birds, such as petrels, morphology influences feeding efficiency. Evidence that blue petrel, Halobaena caerulea, fledglings can detect and orient to dimethyl sulfide.

Procellariiform seabirds (the petrels, albatrosses and shearwaters) are recognized for their acute sense of smell. These pelagic seabirds forage over thousands of miles of ocean to find patchily distributed prey resources. Over the past decade, much headway has been made in unravelling the variety of olfactory foraging strategies that Antarctic species employ, and it is becoming clearer that ol...

Treatment with arginine vasotocin alters mating calls and decreases call attractiveness in male túngara frogs.

The peptide hormone arginine vasotocin (AVT) and its mammalian homolog arginine vasopressin modulate a variety of social behaviors in vertebrates. In anurans, AVT influences the production of advertisement calls, the acoustic signals that males use to attract females and repel rival males. In this study, we investigate the effects of AVT on call characteristics in the túngara frog (Physalaemus ...

GRASP: Grammar- and Syntax-based Pattern-Finder in CALL

We introduce a method for learning to describe the attendant contexts of a given query for language learning. In our approach, we display phraseological information in the form of a summary of general patterns as well as lexical bundles anchored at the query. The method involves syntactical analyses and inverted file construction. At run-time, grammatical constructions and their lexical instant...

Male blue monkeys alarm call in response to danger experienced by others.

Male blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis stuhlmanni) of Budongo Forest, Uganda, produce two acoustically distinct alarm calls: hacks to crowned eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) and pyows to leopards (Panthera pardus) and a range of other disturbances. In playback experiments, males responded to leopard growls exclusively with a series of pyows and to eagle shrieks predominantly with hacks. Respon...
